Clifton Village BID represents and supports local businesses across the vibrant Clifton Village area, promoting it as a safe, welcoming, attractive, clean, and thriving destination for visitors, residents, and traders.
A BID (Business Improvement District) is a defined area where businesses collaborate and invest collectively in initiatives that enhance their trading environment and strengthen the local economy.
The Clifton Village BID drives investment into the area, champions the interests of its business community, and serves as a united voice at both local and national levels, working to ensure Clifton Village continues to flourish as one of Bristol’s most distinctive and desirable destinations.

Over the past year, Clifton Village BID has focused on delivering clear, practical value for
levy payers, strengthening recognition of the BID’s role, and providing tangible support to
businesses and the wider community.

The BID has prioritised initiatives that directly support day-to-day business needs. These
include wellbeing support for levy payers, community safety initiatives delivered in
partnership with the police and Bristol City Council, and direct access to trusted
professional and trade partners. These measures create a more supportive trading
environment.

All BID levy funds collected by Bristol City Council are ringfenced and reinvested directly in Clifton Village, not absorbed into the Council’s general budget. Every pound supports the area’s prosperity, character, sustainability, and delivers clear commercial and environmental benefits for local businesses.

All BID levy funds collected by Bristol City Council are ringfenced and reinvested directly in Clifton Village, not absorbed into the Council’s general budget. Every pound supports the area’s prosperity, character, sustainability, and delivers clear commercial and environmental benefits for local businesses.
The levy funds services beyond the Council’s statutory duties, including events, place-making, safety and wellbeing initiatives, marketing, business support, and partnerships. The BID ensures transparency and accountability, so levy contributions lead to visible, measurable improvements in Clifton Village.

Throughout the year, Clifton BID has worked closely with partners to deliver hands-on
support. This includes Sofa Chats with council representatives, free defibrillator training,
police open clinics, and guidance on grants, safety, and compliance. The BID also supports
businesses through marketing assistance, promotion of events, and clear channels for
submitting content.

A key priority has been improving awareness of what the BID does and how levy
contributions are used. The BID plays a central role in delivering major village events and
seasonal activity, including trails, Clifton Village Day, and Christmas events. Clear messaging
reinforces that these initiatives are funded and delivered for the benefit of levy payers.

The BID has delivered and supported a strong programme of events that enhance footfall,
village pride, and Clifton’s reputation. These include seasonal trails, cultural celebrations,
summer screenings, children’s activities, and festive installations. These events not only
attract visitors but also support local businesses throughout the year.

Strong partnerships underpin the BID’s impact. Collaboration with Bristol City Council,
Clifton Rotary Club, community organisations, and local professionals has enabled the
delivery of services and events that would not otherwise be possible. These relationships
strengthen Clifton’s position as a well-managed, welcoming village.

Building on impact, Clifton BID will continue to focus on practical value, strong
communication, and visible benefits for levy payers. As the BID moves toward the 2027
ballot, clarity, trust, and proven impact will remain central to ensuring businesses feel
confident in the BID’s role and future.

Clifton Village BID (Business Improvement District) is a partnership of local businesses working together to improve commerce in the area. The BID invests in projects that make Clifton Village a more attractive, vibrant and successful place to visit, work and trade.
The BID exists to support two main groups:
The BID delivers activity over and above standard council services, including:
The BID Levy is a contribution paid by eligible businesses within the BID area. The levy is set and collected by Bristol City Council, not by the BID team. The BID then uses these funds solely for projects that benefit Clifton Village.
If the BID did not exist, businesses would still pay a levy through Bristol City Council, but those funds would be distributed across the city for general purposes.
Because Clifton Village has a BID, the money raised here is ring-fenced for Clifton Village, ensuring it is spent directly on supporting local trade, promotion and improvements rather than being absorbed into wider city budgets.
Spending is guided by the BID Business Plan, which is voted on by local businesses. The BID team and Board, made up of local business representatives, ensure funds are used in line with the priorities agreed by levy payers.
Visitors don’t pay the levy directly, but they benefit from BID investment through better events, improved public spaces, stronger independent businesses and a more vibrant Clifton Village.
A BID operates for a fixed term of five years. At the end of each term, businesses vote on whether they want the BID to continue. The current BID term ends in 2027.
Yes. The BID welcomes input from levy payers through meetings, consultations and direct contact with the BID team. Clifton Village BID is business-led and shaped by the needs of the local trading community.
The BID is always looking for business owners levy payers and their staff to get involved with the BID. This could be in terms of joining the BID board, volunteering at events or even suggesting activities. It is your BID. The more that businesses get involved, the more we can focus on delivering what levy payers want. Email us if you are interested in learning more.
